A campaign to boycott the film and urge its immediate removal from Netflix was also trending on social media for several days.
Annapurnani was removed from the Netflix suite in India by Thursday afternoon, much to the delight of the film’s critics.
Sriraj Nair, a spokesman for a Hindu activist group that has criticized the film, said its makers had “realized their mistake”.
“We have never interfered with the creative freedom of any film, but Hindu criticism and mockery will never be tolerated,” he wrote on Twitter. AFP has contacted Netflix’s India arm for comment.
