Concerns have been expressed by both teachers and students about the challenges that students face after taking admission in a medical college. In the first stage, which lasts for a year and a half, students study subjects like anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and the like.
The second phase, lasting one year, involves the study of community medicine and forensic medicine. Pharmacology, pathology and microbiology are the focus of the third phase, which lasts for another year. In the fourth and final phase, students study clinical subjects for one and a half years.
During this period, practical classes in various fields such as medicine, cardiology, paediatrics, thoracic surgery, ortho-surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, anesthesia and obstetrics are conducted under the supervision of qualified doctors within the hospital. However, the 100-bed modern Sadar Hospital currently lacks the required number of doctors and patients.
Additionally, inadequate hospital facilities, including the absence of fully equipped operating rooms, ICUs, CCUs, and NICUs, contribute to the inadequate number of patients. As a result, the education of these students is significantly disrupted, especially with regard to their clinical classes.
Some students studying in the fourth phase told Prothom Alo on the condition of anonymity that 10 months of classes have already been completed and they will have to appear for the final exam after eight months. But he has hardly attended any therapeutic classes so far.
