A break-in attempt occurred in the office building of the attorney general on the Supreme Court premises in Dhaka in the early hours of Friday.
According to an office report, the incident occurred at around 1:15am when several individuals opened and removed two Thai glass window panels from in front of the lifts on the ground and first floors of the building.
The suspects reportedly took one panel away through the rear side of the building but failed to remove the other.
Hearing suspicious noises, office guards Fazlul Haque and Mithun Barai, along with on-duty police personnel, chased the suspects. However, the individuals managed to escape.
The guards informed administrative officer Md Nasir Uddin about the incident at around 8:00am.
After being briefed, attorney general Md Ruhul Quddus Kajal expressed concern that the incident could be an act of sabotage.
He said that certain individuals previously dismissed from job at the AG office and accused of corruption, who had recently been spreading what he described as false propaganda online against the attorney general’s office, might have played a role in provoking the incident.
The attorney general immediately instructed the administrative officer to file a complaint with the police.
He also spoke with deputy commissioner of police (Supreme Court Zone) Nurul Alam and requested a fair and thorough investigation to identify both those directly involved and anyone who might have encouraged or assisted them.
Administrative officer Md Nasir Uddin confirmed the development, saying that legal action was being initiated.
