India’s Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
“I will ensure that there is no foreign military presence on the soil of this country,” Muizzu said at his inauguration ceremony on Friday.
It said Muizzu made the request to India’s Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju, who was representing India at the presidential inauguration.
“It was agreed that the two governments would discuss practical solutions for continued cooperation,” a senior Indian government official said on condition of anonymity. He did not clarify whether India would withdraw its troops.
