Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun today told the Jatiya Sangsad that the government has approved a proposal to procure 875 pickups and 2990 motorcycles for the police.
“Of those, 214 pickups would be bought from the allocation
of the fiscal 2010-2011 and distributed to different upazila or
district headquarters on a priority basis,” she said replying to
a question raised by lawmaker M Shafiqul Islam.
Answering to another question by lawmaker Nasimul Alam
Chowdhury, the home minister informed the House that process is
on to add some sea going vessels to coast guard to strengthen
patrol in the sea and ensure safety of the fisherman.
“Recently at an ECNEC meeting under the chairmanship Prime
Minister approved a project to strengthen the Coast Guard and
more 10 high speed boats will be procured with implementation of
the project,” Sahara said.
She also said the Coast Guard arrested 26 pirates with
smuggled goods during last three months with its limited manpower
and resources. The intensity of piracy would be reduced with
implementation of the new project, the minister added.
Responding to another query of the same lawmaker, the home
minister said the incidence of eve teasing and sexual harassment
has come down due to prompt action of the government.
A total of 160 persons were awarded punishment in different
terms and 12 fined from January from 1, 2011 to February 28, 2011
by the mobile courts for eve teasing, Sahara said.
