Earlier, opener Shan Masood was dismissed for seven runs. Fakhar Zaman scored 33 off 64 balls and Mohammad Rizwan was dismissed for nine, leaving Pakistan struggling at 66–4.
“We just couldn’t finish it the way we had planned,” Azam said.
“However, the whole series was excellent. Good performances. There were many positives, we were able to check on our bench strength.”
Usama Mir scored 20, Shadab Khan 14, Shaheen Shah Afridi zero and Mohammad Wasim scored six but could not offer enough to support Ahmed.
New Zealand’s innings was built on Young’s 87 from 91 balls and Latham’s 59 from 58 balls after the visitors won the toss and opted to bat at the National Stadium.
New Zealand lost Tom Blundell for 15 and then Henry Nicholls for 23, before Young steadied the innings with a 74-run third-wicket stand with Latham.
Young hit eight fours and two sixes and was in search of a century but was caught by wicketkeeper Rizwan in the 30th over off leg-spinner Shadab.
