The US President adopted the policy – Memorandum on Advancing Worker Empowerment, Rights, and High Labor Standards Globally – on November 16, in an effort to protect and promote worker rights at home and around the world.
In its letter dated November 20, the Bangladesh mission in Washington said, “Although the ‘memorandum’ appears to be a global policy applicable to all countries, there are reasons to believe that Bangladesh may have been one of the targets.”
It was also said that this policy is a signal to Bangladesh as the US can take any of the measures mentioned in the policy in the name of labor issues. Furthermore, the memorandum may have an impact on the apparel sector especially in Bangladesh.
