Obama’s term as president from 2009 to 2017 coincided with Merkel’s latter’s time in office, and the two leaders had a warm relationship.
The former US President also had lunch with the current Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, on Wednesday.
He said that both the leaders may be from opposite parties, but they share the same core values.
He said that these differences in views make a healthy democracy.
