Earlier, the interim government had named former foreign affairs advisor Mohammad Tauheed Hossain as Bangladesh’s candidate.
Following the change in government, Prime Minister Tariq Rahman nominated Khalilur Rahman for the post.
The election for the President of the 81st session of the UNGA is scheduled to take place on 2 June at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in accordance with Rule 30 of the Rules of Procedure.
Under the established regional rotation system, the Chairperson for the 81st session will be elected from the Asia-Pacific Group.
The 81st session of the UNGA will begin on September 8, 2026, while the high-level general debate will begin on September 22.
Bangladesh last held this position in 1986–87, when then Foreign Minister Humayun Rashid Chowdhury was elected President of the 41st General Assembly.
