Our Emperor Nero and his foreign travels

As the newly elected mayor has not yet assumed responsibility, a Chief Executive Office is in charge of the overall functioning of the municipal corporation, Prothom Alo reports. He had no knowledge about this journey.

The mayor and councilors who won the latest Municipal Corporation elections have not yet assumed responsibility. The tenure of the officers ended on October 11. Of the 26 councilors who visited India, seven lost the elections. As per the rules, there is no scope for them to travel outside the country for official or personal purposes without permission. Still, how could so many public representatives go on this holiday together? This is possible only when the public representatives do not have any sense of responsibility towards the public. They do not feel accountable even towards their institution, authority or ministry. Our public administration and public representatives are carrying forward this well-established ‘culture’. As if they care whether people are drowning in water or burning in fire!

It is no secret how Chattogram, a city of natural beauty with its hills, rivers and sea, acquired the notoriety of being the most waterlogged city in the country. Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) was given the responsibility of resolving waterlogging. One project, ‘Reducing waterlogging of Chattogram city’, was launched without any feasibility study. And it is an undeniable truth that any project means foreign trips for the officials concerned. And so the project director, deputy director and assistant director traveled to Brazil, Panama and China. Meanwhile, the cost of the hastily launched project has increased from Tk 55 billion to Tk 85 billion.
