Six prison guards were transferred on 30 July over the Papia incident. They say that senior officers are responsible for this incident, but they are the scapegoats. He was not even present at the time of the incident. He met the Home Minister at his residence and demanded that his transfer order be put on hold and an inquiry into the irregularities in the prison be conducted.
A prison guard told Prothom Alo, “If the investigation proves that we have done wrong, we can be dismissed from service, but we still want an investigation. The senior officers are responsible, but we little fry’s get punished.” He claims that he was not present there at the time of the incident.
Recently transferred Senior Jail Super Obaidur Rahman and Jailor Farhana Akhtar told Prothom Alo that none of these six were involved in the Papiya incident. Their transfer is entirely the jurisdiction of higher officials.
Senior Jail Superintendent Obaidur Rehman was asked whether he was transferred because of the Papia incident. He said, “I came to this jail only five months ago and took action whenever there was any irregularity. I don’t see any justification to transfer me immediately before the Papia incident investigation.”
Speaking to Prothom Alo, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said that the investigation is on. Whoever is found guilty in the investigation, strict action will be taken against him. When asked whether the women prison guards of Kashimpur Jail had met him, the Home Minister replied, “They had come to me. They complained that they were being transferred even though they were not involved in the Papia incident.” I have told the secretary to look into the issue and consider the matter accordingly.”
