SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Party City, the iconic retailer known for its balloons, Halloween costumes, and festive supplies, has announced its closure after nearly four decades in business. The decision marks a somber end to the brand that had been a cornerstone of celebrations across the United States.

In an emotional meeting held on Friday, CEO Barry Litwin informed employees that Party City would immediately begin winding down its operations. Corporate staff were told that their employment would end that day, with no severance pay and benefits being cut off as the company ceases operations.

“This is, without a doubt, the most difficult message I’ve ever had to deliver,” Litwin said during the video conference, viewed by CNN. He explained that despite the company’s best efforts, financial struggles had made it impossible to continue.

Challenges and Closure

Litwin cited inflation as a significant factor in the company’s downfall, driving up operational costs while reducing consumer spending. “We’ve done everything possible to avoid this outcome,” he stated. “Unfortunately, it’s necessary to commence a wind-down process immediately.”

Store employees received notification letters that all Party City locations would close by February 28, 2024. The letters expressed regret over the decision and thanked staff for their contributions.

Despite repeated attempts to stabilize its finances, Party City was unable to recover from its $1.7 billion debt. Although it successfully canceled nearly $1 billion through its January 2023 bankruptcy filing, it still faced overwhelming financial hurdles. The New Jersey-based company closed more than 80 stores between late 2022 and August 2024 but couldn’t offset declining revenues.

A Tumultuous Ending

Signs of the company’s collapse had surfaced in recent weeks. Two weeks ago, Party City’s product development team was abruptly called back from an annual vendor meeting due to safety concerns, as the company had stopped paying suppliers. On December 10, corporate employees were sent home, and security locked the headquarters’ main entrance.

An email sent the following day instructed staff to provide notice before entering the building and to prevent unauthorized individuals from gaining access. Internal chat logs revealed frustration and anger among employees, many of whom felt blindsided by the lack of communication.

On Friday’s call, Litwin apologized for the company’s handling of the situation. “We recognize the flow of communication has not been how we typically handle sensitive matters like this,” he said.

Karen McGowan, the Chief Human Resources Officer, broke down in tears during the call as she discussed employee benefits and severance. “This is a lot to take in,” she said, pausing as she became visibly emotional.

The End of an Era

Party City’s closure marks the fall of the largest party supply chain in the United States, which once employed over 16,000 workers. Its struggles stemmed from rising competition with online retailers like Amazon, big-box stores such as Walmart and Costco, and pop-up seasonal concepts like Spirit Halloween.

The pandemic compounded these issues, with supply chain disruptions, a helium shortage impacting its balloon business, and inflation eroding profit margins.

The company isn’t alone in its struggles. It joins a growing list of retailers forced to shutter operations in 2024. Notably, Big Lots also announced its closure this week, citing similar financial woes.

Reflections and Legacy

Party City’s demise is a sobering reminder of the shifting retail landscape. While customers remember it as the go-to destination for celebrations, the company faced insurmountable challenges in adapting to modern consumer habits.

The closure leaves a void in the party supply market and signals the end of an era for a brand synonymous with joy and festivity. As Party City exits the stage, it leaves behind a legacy of helping Americans celebrate life’s most memorable moments.
