Pele posted regularly during the Qatar World Cup, including a congratulatory message to captain Lionel Messi after Argentina took home the top prize.
He wrote, “Congratulations Argentina! Diego (Maradona, who passed away on November 25, 2020) is probably smiling now.”
Pelé also watched from the hospital as star player Neymar equaled the goals record of 77 with the “Seleção”.
Pele has received messages from well-wishers around the world, most recently from French striker Kylian Mbappe, who earlier this month called on fans to “pray for the king”.
Pelé’s last public appearance alongside Mbappe was in April 2019 for a promotional event in Paris.
World Cup host country Qatar also showed its support for Pele, lighting up buildings with the message “Get well soon”.
