Mentioning that mother tongue is most important for education, the government head said, “That is what I believe. If one gets education through his mother tongue, it will be very easy to get that education, to know that education, to understand that education.”
However, he added that there is also a need to learn more than one language in the workplace as all the countries in the world are now very close to each other.
Sheikh Hasina said that since the children of the country are very bright, it will not be difficult for them to learn two or three languages.
He said that this type of system is running in many countries of the world.
“As we have struggled for our mother tongue, I feel that our medium of education should be the mother tongue, and apart from this there should be scope to learn other languages also properly. And this should start from the primary level.”
Because, he said, if this process of learning does not start from the primary level, then children will not be able to adopt it properly. “In this process, the path to gaining knowledge will become easier and broader,” he said.
Criticizing the mentality of a section of parents to educate their children in English medium without mother tongue, he said that a section of people in the country now pronounce Bengali with an English accent, which seems ridiculous.
