PM hints at no talks before next elections

DHAKA, November 26, 2022 (BSS) – Prime Minister and Awami League (AL) chairperson Sheikh Hasina today indicated that there will be no talks before the next general elections, saying any party can participate in the polls, if she wants to.

“Bangladesh has a multi-party democracy and an independent election commission. If a party wants to participate in the (next general) election, they can. If a party doesn’t have the capacity to participate in the election, they can’t.” Can.” Told.

The Prime Minister said this while addressing the inaugural session of the Sixth Triennial Council of the Bangladesh Mohila Awami League (BMAL), the women’s wing of the ruling Awami League, at the historic Suhrawardy Garden in the capital city here this afternoon.

“Many people say there should be talks. With whom will talks be held, is it with BNP, convicted accused Khaleda Zia and Tariq Rehman who wanted to kill me with grenade attacks?” he said.

The prime minister asked whether he would have to negotiate with the corrupt, the orphans’ money embezzlers, the money launderers, the arms smugglers, the grenade launchers, the killers of Ivy Rahman.

He said that Khaleda Zia’s husband Ziaur Rahman was the murderer of her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

She said, “They are talking about human rights (but trying to negotiate with BNP to take them in the election). I want to ask them what kind of demand it is.”

The Prime Minister asserted that the people of the country would hold the elections even if any party boycotted it and that they would not accept rigging of votes.

Referring to the election conducted by Khaleda Zia on February 15, 1996, he said that the people of the country did not accept the election and threw her out of power within a month and a half of the election.

“Khaleda Zia had to resign (from power) on allegations of vote rigging,” he said.

Sheikh Hasin said that the people agitated against vote rigging and the inhuman atrocities committed by BNP-Jamaat goons and police personnel on the public, especially women.

“Pregnant women and mothers were not spared from the torture,” he added.

But, the women of BNP are now taking out processions and holding rallies without any interference from the government, she said, adding that they have not forgotten the ordeal inflicted on them.

Referring to the arson attacks by BNP and its factions in 2013-14 in the name of agitations, the Prime Minister said that the agitation of BNP is to kill innocent people through arson.

He warned, “We have no objection, if you want to agitate and struggle, take out processions, hold meetings.

Mentioning that he never forgets the inhuman torture inflicted on the Awami League men by the BNP-Jamaat faction and said, “We tolerated your torture, but don’t consider tolerance as our weakness. It is not our weakness.”

The Prime Minister reminded the BNP workers that the people of Bangladesh are in favor of the Awami League.

He said, “People are with the Awami League, not with the killers. Ziaur Rehman, Khaleda Zia and Tariq Rehman are the killers. For what right will they come before the public and seek votes and do politics.”

He said that Khaleda Zia and Tariq Rehman have been sentenced to jail for their crimes.

He said, “So, can they do anything for the welfare of the countrymen? But, when the Awami League took over, they worked for the welfare of the people.”

The Prime Minister asked the women al leaders and activists to work for the betterment of the country and its people.

Briefly describing the various measures for the overall development of the women folk, Sheikh Hasina said that her government is making every effort for women as she believes that women, who constitute half of the total population, No development can happen by keeping it in the dark.

The Prime Minister said that his government has taken measures to appoint women first in the Armed Forces, BGB, Police and High Court, as well as appoint women to top posts in administration and police, including secretaries, deputy commissioners, officers- The rank of officer is included. He said the government is doing everything including 60 per cent reservation for women in the recruitment of primary teachers, 20 per cent reservation for women in local body elections and women can participate in union, upazila and zilla parishad elections. ,

He said that there are 23 women in the parliament who are directly elected by the people’s vote along with 50 others from reserved seats.

The Prime Minister said his government is giving allowances to widows, elderly women, lactating mothers and pregnant women to ensure a better life.

To mark the council, the entire Dhaka city turned festive as thousands of Mohila Awami League leaders and workers, including councilors and delegates, thronged the historic Suhrawardy Garden and its surrounding areas from early morning with colorful pylons, placards and banners.
