PM inaugurates nationwide canal excavation program in Dinajpur

Prime Minister Tariq Rahman today inaugurated the nationwide program for dredging and re-dredging of rivers, canals and water bodies with the aim of improving irrigation, boosting agricultural production and strengthening water management.

The Prime Minister started the excavation of 53 canals across the country by starting the excavation of 12 km long Sahpara canal in Balrampur area in Kaharole upazila of the district.

At 12:27 pm, he formally launched the initiative by cutting soil with a shovel. Later he planted a tree on the banks of Sahapara canal.

LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Social Welfare Minister Dr AZM Zahid Hussain, Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chaudhary Ani and Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu and Minister of State for Water Resources Forhad Hussain Azad among others were present at the event.

Earlier, the Prime Minister reached Syedpur Airport by air from Dhaka and later by road to the venue on the banks of Sahapara Canal here.
