The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has banned New Year’s Eve celebrations in the capital to maintain law and order.
All bars in Dhaka have been ordered to be closed till 6 pm on Saturday. Outdoor events, as well as flying sky lanterns and bursting firecrackers, have been banned.
DMP commissioner Khandekar Ghulam Farooq told a media briefing on Saturday that the police would take action if the restrictions were violated.
The world will start the new year on Saturday midnight with colorful programs.
The police in Bangladesh are known to impose several restrictions every year on New Year’s Eve to avoid untoward incidents.
“Many people blow up lanterns during New Year. We are banning them as they cause accidents. Legal action will be taken against anyone who blows them up,” Farooq said.
