Local varieties of onions were being sold at 140-150 taka per kg, imported Indian onions at 120-130 taka per kg and newly arrived local varieties at 100-110 taka per kg. Onion prices rose by Tk 40-50 per kg overnight after India announced a ban on its onion exports to hit local markets.
There was a slight increase in the prices of packaged sugar and bottled soybean oil last week. The price of eggs produced in poultry farms increased to 125-130 taka per dozen, but the prices of chickens, beef, as well as farm eggs, pangas and tilapia remained unchanged.
Ramisa Anwar had come to Rampura Rasoi Bazar in the capital to buy essential items. He told Prothom Alo that they rarely eat fish and red meat. Since a lot of winter vegetables are now available, they are buying more, he said.
