Poverty scenario: Wrong policies, corruption increase income inequality

BBS says poverty rates have increased in Dhaka, Barishal and Sylhet divisions over the past six years. This rate is now 17.9 percent in Dhaka, 15.8 percent in Chattogram, 16.7 percent in Rajshahi, 17.4 percent in Sylhet, 24.8 percent in Rangpur and 24.2 percent in Mymensingh.

In 2016, Barishal division had the highest poverty rate at 26.9 percent, while Rangpur division had the highest poverty rate at 47 percent.

The country is developing and the size of the budget is increasing. But there is also a need to find out how many people are benefiting from that development. It must be acknowledged that despite all the development, income inequality in Bangladesh still remains at alarming rates.

The Gini coefficient has increased to 499 points at the end of 2022. If it increases by one point more and the Gini coefficient reaches 500 points, Bangladesh will be marked as a country with high income inequality.
