Prime Minister Hasina launches Dhaka-Bhanga rail service, establishing an important link in the Trans-Asian Railway Network

Bangladesh Railways is constructing 172 km long new rail tracks from Dhaka to Jashore under the Padma Bridge Rail Link Project as its 82 km stretch connecting Dhaka and Bhanga was opened today, while the remaining stretch connecting Jashore will open next year. Construction is likely to begin in June, it said in the project description.

The inauguration of the Dhaka-Bhanga rail service via Padma Bridge comes one year and two months after the inauguration of the historic Padma Bridge in June last year.

Last year on October 14, the Prime Minister had inaugurated the construction work of the rail link between Dhaka and Jessore under the ‘Padma Bridge Rail Link Construction Project’ as the cost of the project is estimated at Tk 39,246.80 crore while Exim Bank of China is providing Tk 21,036.70. Upon completion, the railway connectivity will improve access to the capital city with the central and south-western regions of the country through the Padma Bridge, covering new areas of Munshiganj, Shariatpur, Madaripur and Narail districts.

The project will establish alternative railway connectivity connecting Dhaka-Jessore-Khulna along a 212.05 km shorter route.

It will also establish another sub-route of the Trans-Asian Railway network in Bangladesh and start national, regional and international freight and BG container train service as this route will be free from speed and weight restrictions to carry containers.
