Prime minister Sheikh Hasina said, her government will build a new international airport near the capital with sate of the art technology. Few years ago a similar project was initiated but that was abandoned after mass protest from locals and environmental activists. They said, building an airport will destroy environment and ecosystem by as a new airport will be built by filling wetland. Many aviation experts argued that at this time Bangladesh don’t need a new international airport; it will be wastage of money.
Government decided to name the airport as ‘Bangabandhu International Airport’, who is the founder president of Bangladesh and present prime minister’s father. That project was virtually abandoned.
Now prime minister says government will initiate the project after site selection. She also said, a tunnel connecting Shahjalal airport and adjacent rail station will be built soon.
