Prof Israfil appointed first VC of Thakurgaon University

Activities at Thakurgaon University formally began with the appointment of its first vice-chancellor.

Mohammad Israfil, a professor in the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at Dhaka University, has been appointed the inaugural vice-chancellor of Thakurgaon University.

The Ministry of Education issued a notification in this regard yesterday, signed by Assistant Secretary Md Sultan Ahmed.

Prof Israfil joined the university as vice-chancellor today.

According to the notification, he will serve a four-year term from the date of joining.

Born in Thakurgaon, Israfil obtained his BSS (Honours) in Political Science from the University of Dhaka in 1988. He later completed a master’s degree in Theatre and Performance Studies from the National School of Drama (NSD), Delhi, in 1991.

He earned his PhD from Rabindra Bharati University, focusing his research on political performance in the context of South Asian history, cultural resistance, and agitation propaganda.

Israfil joined Dhaka University as a lecturer in 1997 and has long been associated with teaching and research in theatre and performance studies. Before that, he served as a part-time teacher at the same university from 1995.
