Protests erupt in Haiti after police officers killed in gang violence

Haiti’s national police and the prime minister’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Wittelhomme gang killed four police officers near the capital last week, while seven other officers were killed in a shootout with the Savion gang in the city of Liancourt, according to Haiti’s national police and local media reports.

The turmoil comes as the United Nations discusses sending a foreign strike force to confront Haitian criminal groups, a proposal originally made three months earlier.

No country has offered to lead such an army.
