Railway was so popular in the subcontinent, because it is cheaper and safer than road communication. But railway authority has shutdown many rail stations in recent years for manpower and passenger shortage. Railway has been failing to offer proper service to its customers. Many railway stations and rail crossings have manpower shortage.
Two hundred and forty two stations out of four hundred and forty four stations are shut down. But after 1985 almost not third class and fourth employees have been recruited. It is reported that around fifteen thousand posts are vacant at present, which is hampering normal operation.
Some initiatives of recruitment have been halted by court order. Every year more and more employees are retiring and creating vacancy. No one knows when the legal complexities will be resolved.
