After the incident, the main accused Sohail Rana escaped by breaking the grill of the toilet window of the flat. However, his wife was captured at the scene. Sohail Rana was arrested later the same evening in Fatullah, Narayanganj.
The next day after the incident, the child’s father lodged a case at Pallabi police station. On the afternoon of 20 May, Sohail Rana gave a statement before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid. In his statement, he confessed to raping the girl and later killing her.
