Rapid increase in mosquito infestation: 40% increase in just 2 months

Culex mosquito infestation has increased in various parts of Dhaka North and South Municipal Corporations. Specifically, in Dhaka North Municipal Corporation (DNCC). According to a study conducted by Jahangirnagar University (JU) in Savar and two cities, the number of Culex mosquitoes has increased by 40 per cent.

Kabirul Bashar, professor of zoology at JU, led the study. “We have been conducting surveys on mosquitoes on a regular basis since October last year and have found that the number of mosquitoes has increased every month,” he told Prothom.

According to entomologists, there are about 123 species of mosquitoes in our country. Among them, 16 species have high prevalence in the country. Culex constitute more than 95 per cent of the species of mosquitoes present throughout the year in various parts of the country, including the capital. Culex mosquito bites can cause filariasis and many other skin diseases.
