Republicans oust Ilhan Omar from high-profile US House committee

Benjamin Franklin, whose 1776 Declaration of Independence and 1787 signing of the US Constitution earned him a reputation as a Founding Father, is featured on the $100 bill.

During the debate, Republican Mike Lawler said, “Words matter, rhetoric matters. It hurts. The Congresswoman is being held accountable for her words and her actions.”

Omar and other Democrats said any such comments were made years ago and at that time Omar had removed the posts and apologized.

Moments before the House expelled him from the committee, the defiant Omar said, “My leadership and voice will not diminish if I am not on this committee… My voice will become louder and stronger.”

Omar has said in the past that the US military and the military of other countries should be held to the same standards of accountability when their actions hurt or kill civilians.

The expulsions, led by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, were seen by Democrats as revenge for voting Republicans Marjorie Taylor Green and Paul Gosar out of their committee assignments in 2021 following incendiary comments.

In 2021, Green compared COVID-19 mask requirements and vaccinations to the Nazi Holocaust in which 6 million Jews died. He eventually apologized. Prior to his 2020 election to Congress, he voiced unsubstantiated conspiracy theories, including an antisemitic claim suggesting a space laser was intentionally used to start the California wildfires.
