The unprecedented campaign and the arrest of powerful leaders of the ruling party generated a lot of buzz. About 11 leaders were arrested and many fled in the campaign which lasted for one and a half months.
AL leaders at the time said that the campaign was undertaken with a view to do damage control for the party after two general elections. Secondly, there was a struggle between the two groups in the party and inspiration was an expression of that struggle.
After the anti-casino campaign, the councils of the Jubo League, the SwachhSebak League, the Krishak League, the Workers’ League and almost all other allied bodies held councils where the controversial leaders were fired. Many of them have again started making their way into politics.
When asked, Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, president of the Jubo League, told Prothom Alo, “Anybody who follows the ideals of Bangabandhu has a chance to contribute as workers, provided they don’t have any legal bar. But we haven’t had any discussion on increasing anyone’s positions in the jubo league.”
