“After the anti-hoarding campaign started, there is no trading of rice in the market. Earlier each wholesaler used to sell five to six trucks of rice every day. Now not a single truck is selling rice. In such a situation, many traders are forced to sell rice at low prices. Otherwise, if any stock of rice is found in the warehouse, you may have to pay the fine any time,” expressed Dwijen Chandra Ghosh, a trader at Alupatti rice market in Nagaon.

The mobile court imposed a fine of Tk 685,000 on 15 traders accused of illegally storing paddy and rice during raids in various upazilas of Nagaon from Tuesday to Thursday.

The district administration has announced to continue the campaign against illegal hoarders.

Chatra market in Niyamatpur upazila is one of the largest rice markets in Nagaon. Buying and selling of paddy takes place every day of the week in this market.

Talking to traders and vendors in the market on Friday, it was found that the thick varieties of Swarna-5 and Swarna-51 (hybrid Swarna) rice were being sold at Tk 1,200 to Tk 1,210 each. Even three days ago the price was 1,260 to 1,270 taka.
