In view of the widespread protests, the authorities increased the minimum wage from Taka 8,000 to Taka 12,500. But the workers rejected the pay scale and continued their protest for a minimum wage of Taka 23,000.

In such a backdrop, at least 130 RMG factories in Savar and Dhamrai areas of Dhaka have suspended operations.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has indicated that factories may remain closed until the situation improves.

At least three workers have died during the ongoing protests over the past few weeks. On the other hand, a total of 22 cases have been registered against around 16,000 unidentified workers for vandalism in Ghazipur.
