A 22-year-old garment worker was killed after falling from the doorway of an intercity train while returning home from Dhaka in Netrokona early yesterday.
The accident occurred around 4:00am in the Rajurbazar area of the town.
The deceased was identified as Muhid Khan, son of Moinul Kabir Khan of Boropaikura village in Mohanganj upazila’s Tetulia union. He worked at a garment factory in Dhaka.
According to police and local sources, Muhid boarded the Haor Express in Dhaka on Thursday night to return home. As he could not get a ticket, he was standing near the train’s doorway during the journey.
Police said Muhid apparently dozed off in the early hours of Friday, lost his grip, and fell from the moving train. One of his legs was severed under the train, while the rest of his body was thrown into a water-filled roadside ditch.
Local residents spotted the body and informed the Mohanganj Railway Police, who later recovered it.
Muhid’s cousin, Dewan Riyad, said a fellow passenger told the family that Muhid had fallen asleep while standing beside the train door and fell near Rajurbazar.
Sub-Inspector Mobarak Hossain, in-charge of the Mohanganj Railway Police Outpost, confirmed the incident.
“The family has applied to receive the body without an autopsy. A decision will be taken after consultation with the higher authorities,” he said.
