Meanwhile, Chattogram City Corporation has set an ambitious but commendable target of cleaning the city within just 6 hours.
According to statistics, around 900,000 animals are targeted to be sacrificed in Dhaka city alone, which may generate more than 40,000 tonnes of waste. If this huge amount of waste is not removed quickly, the rains during the monsoon season combined with the decomposed waste can create a catastrophic situation in the cities. This can block drainage systems and increase the risk of spreading infectious diseases.
To address this risk, the initiatives taken this year – such as the supply of jute bags and increasing the number of sanitation workers and vehicles – are undoubtedly positive steps. The arrangement made by the Mayor of Chattogram to use different trucks to collect unsold or spoiled raw hides is also highly timely and will play a major role in preventing environmental pollution.
