Every year, with its own fleet, the Municipal Corporation hires pickups, dump trucks, pay-loaders and laborers through tenders to expedite disposal of residual waste. This year, more than 800 workers were hired.
Two officials from the concerned municipal department told Prothom Alo that during Eid-ul-Azha, contractors usually supply dump trucks (trucks that carry garbage) and pay-loaders (heavy machinery used to clear garbage from streets and load it into trucks) as per the agreement. The real issue arises regarding the supply of pickups. It is an undeniable reality that not all pickups come as per the contract.
Requesting anonymity, the two officials further said that with regard to recruitment of temporary workers, some contractors present existing van service employees and the municipal corporation’s own permanent sweepers as newly appointed temporary labourers. As a result, all the employees do not report for duty on Eid day as per the agreement, leading to irregularities.
Regarding this issue, urban planner Adil Muhammad Khan told Prothom Alo that bringing about structural change in any system is no easy task.
