Sector comander Mir Shawkat died

Valiant freedom fighter and Sector Commander of the Liberation War Lt Gen (retd) Mir Shawkat Ali Bir Uttam died at his Gulshan residence here this evening.

Liberation War veteran Lt Gen Shawkat, who was suffering from Cancer and went by-pass surgery few days ago, breathed his last at about 6 pm, family sources said.

He was 73. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and hosts of relatives, friends and admirers to mourn his death.

Gen Shawkat was the commander of sector- 5 during War of Liberation and served as minister and high commissioner of Bangladesh in Britain.

The death of Gen Shawkat cast pall of gloom in the city. Hearing the news leaders of different political parties, social
organizations and freedom fighters rushed to his residence.

A K Khandakar Bir Uttam and Secretary General Lt Gen Retd) Harun-
ar Rashid Bir Pratik expressed their deep shock at the death of
Mir Shawkat Ali.

“We are extremely shocked at his death and his demise is an
irreparable loss to the nation,” they said.

They said Gen Shawkat had played a significant role in the
formation of the Sector Commanders’ Forum.

They expressed their deep sympathy to the members of the
bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace of the departed
soul.
