Shakira lands Latin Grammys honour

Pop superstar Shakira has landed a special Latin Grammy award for her contribution to music and tireless charity work.

‘The Hips Don’t Lie’ hitmaker has been named the Latin Recording Academy’s ‘Person of the Year’, and she will collect the prize during a special gala on 9 November, a day before the Latin Grammys in Las Vegas, reports contactmusic.com.

The trophy has previously been awarded to Carlos Santana, Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias and Ricky Martin.

Shakira says, ‘It is truly an honour to be in the company of some of the greatest artists and legends of Latin Music’.

Latin Recording Academy President Gabriel Abaroa, Jr. adds, ‘We are honoured to pay homage to this dynamic, socially conscious woman whose illustrious career has touched so many people around the world, both musically and personally’.

Shakira is also nominated for three awards at the ceremony, including album of the year for ‘Sale el Sol’.
