About 55,000 farmers in the district are currently involved in shrimp farming.
According to the fisheries department of the district, there are about 77,000 badas (“enclosures”, as the locals call them) on 72,724 hectares of land. Among them, there are 52,000 enclosures for black tiger shrimp, or “bagda” farming on 52,000 hectares of land, and a total of 25,000 enclosures on 20,000 hectares for scampy shrimp, or “galda” farming.
In the last financial year (2021-22), a total of 35,000 tonnes of shrimp was produced in Bagerhat and 35,672 metric tonnes in 2020-21.
A total of 24,104 MT of shrimp was exported from Khulna division in the financial year 2021-22 and the country earned TK 4000 crore in that financial year. In the financial year 2020-21, 35,672 MT of shrimp was exported from Khulna, and the export earnings stood at Rs 3,700 crore.
