On 12 February, the day after the elections, the lock of a local Awami League office in Chaklahat, Panchgarh was opened in the presence of a local BNP leader. Since then, more than a dozen offices have reopened across the country. At some places, portraits of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina were hung inside; At other places, slogans were raised in front of the offices without even opening the locks.
Last Friday in Dhanmondi, in front of the political office of the Awami League president, some leaders of the Jubo Mohila League hung the national flag and the photograph of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the gate and raised slogans.
According to reports sent by Prothom Alo correspondents, from the day after the national elections to last Saturday, Awami League offices were opened at district and metropolitan level in 12 places. Additionally, seven to eight offices were reopened at the upazila and union level. However, at some places banners put up by the Awami League were torn down.
Soon after the fall of the Awami League government, party and affiliated organization offices in Dhaka and across the country were evacuated. Most of the offices were arson, vandalized and looted.
Awami League has three major offices in Dhaka. The head office is in Gulistan. The political office of the party president was in Dhanmondi. In 2023, another large office was inaugurated next to the Tejgaon Truck Stand, which was opened as the Dhaka District Awami League Office. However, in the run-up to the 2024 parliamentary election, many central activities were conducted from that office.
After the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, these three offices were set on fire. The destroyed offices have remained abandoned for 18 months. The central office of Awami League in Gulistan has become a haven for vagrants.
