SIPG Seminar: Geopolitical issues behind joining BRICS

Addressing the seminar as a panel speaker, former Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haq said that BRICS was not formed through discussion or bargaining among member countries, but was formed in the board room of an organization. Hence, it did not take off as a dedicated platform for economics and investing.

He stressed that the anticipated expansion of BRICS is driven by the desire to use the forum as a geopolitical tool.

Shahidul Haque identified three major challenges that Bangladesh may face while joining the alliance. First, let’s start with the changed reality after the country moves out of the least developed countries group (LDCs) in 2026. In addition, he referred to challenges with respect to the capability of the armed forces and the ability to maintain a balance between the superpowers.
