Once Nissanka lost to Shadab Khan, Mendis and Samarawickrama produced some brilliant hitting against Pakistan’s fast bowlers and spinners and added 111 runs for the third wicket.

He attacked fast bowler Haris Rauf fiercely in the 21st over and hit him two sixes and a four.

When Shaheen came back for the second spell, Mendis hit three fours in the 25th over.

Mendis hit a six off Hasan Ali which helped the batsman complete his third century in 65 balls.

It was his first century in over a year and a half, but he had scored 76 in the opening loss to South Africa and now has at least five half-centuries in his last seven ODIs.

Earlier, Kumar Sangakkara had created a Sri Lanka World Cup record by scoring a century in 70 balls against England in 2015.

Mendis’ previous best performance was 119 against West Indies in Hambantota in February 2020.
