Student politics and power: examining the dominance of student leagues in Bangladesh universities.

That is why the open letter written by BUET students to the Prime Minister states, “In the last few years we have seen the negative side of power in the name of student politics on the BUET campus. It is student politics that has given rise to domination, power, ragging, humiliating teachers, extortion, repression of students and violence. There have even been murders.”

If this tagging behind political parties and dominance of one party is ended, then naturally student organizations will not become centers of unchecked crime. The new crimes that are coming to light are a matter of disappointment and shame. An example of this is a young woman being raped in the Jahangirnagar complex, while her husband has been detained. Recent incidents of sexual harassment and abuse at Chittagong University, Jagannath University, Kabi Nazrul University and Islamic University of Mymensingh are examples of such domination and criminal tendencies. This must end. Therefore, the demands of BUET students cannot be called unrealistic or undemocratic. They are not calling for a stop to BUET students participating in off-campus politics.

The events of the last few days have given rise to other questions such as the role of the university administration. It is not at all understandable why there was no representative of the university authorities during the hearing of the Chhatra League leader's appeal in the High Court. What is the reason to expect that the government lawyers will take a tough stance against the ruling party's student body?
