Study reveals worrying decline of indigenous trees in Dhaka city

The study was conducted in Ramana Park, Suhrawardy Garden and Dhaka University area. It was found that 58 percent of the trees in these areas are of foreign species. Of those plants, 33 percent are intended solely for beautification.

A research report published in Bangladesh Journal of Plant Taxonomy in 2021 revealed that out of 15 species of trees planted on road dividers, nine were invasive alien species.

Professor Mohammad Jashim Uddin described this choice of invasive alien species of trees over local species as suicidal. He warned that this would have far reaching consequences.
