Administrative tasks have improved due to advances in automation. According to two university officials, recruitment, promotion, upgradation, retirement – all are done through the “Career SUST” portal. Furthermore, students’ semester registration, credit fees, course registration and results are done through “My SUST Apps/Portal”.
Clearance services, certificates, marksheets and grade sheets can also be done online through the application. However, students complain that they often face problems due to slow internet in the residential halls.
Meanwhile, complaints of shortage of medicines at the University Medical Center have been going on for a long time. Moreover, doctors often advise students to visit Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for even minor problems. The students said that the same situation continues even after the rebellion.
After the rebellion, new social sciences buildings, IICT buildings and centers of excellence have been opened, reducing classroom shortage in four to five departments. However, class shortages still persist in the Oceanography, Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration departments.
Subrata Sarkar, head of the oceanography department, said they have only two classrooms. Due to shortage of classrooms classes are held in auditoriums or other departments. Recently two more rooms have been allotted, but they are not yet operational.
When asked about the overall educational environment compared to earlier, Professor Khalidur Rahman of the Department of Statistics said, “It can be looked at in two ways – the academic environment of teachers and students. But I would say that the educational environment has not changed much as expected. People have certain qualities. These qualities do not change; rather they try to make the most of the opportunity when they get the chance. So we are not seeing any significant change.”
