Talks stuck in limbo, America, Iran warn to be ready for war

A separate ceasefire agreed between Israel and Lebanon was announced on Friday and also includes Hezbollah, whose rocket attacks in support of Iran dragged Lebanon into the war.

Israel and Lebanon, which have no diplomatic ties, will hold a second round of talks in Washington on Thursday, a State Department official told AFP.

Sporadic violence continued and the Israeli military warned civilians against returning to dozens of villages in southern Lebanon, claiming that Hezbollah’s activities were violating the ceasefire.

Nonetheless, thousands of displaced Lebanese have begun to return.

Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah told AFP that his group would work to break the “yellow line” that Israel has established in the south, though he said he wanted to “continue the ceasefire.”

At least 2,387 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanon since the war began, a Lebanese government body said in its latest figures.

Another major issue in US-Iran talks is Tehran’s stockpile of enriched uranium, which Trump said on Friday it had agreed to hand over.

But Iran’s Foreign Ministry has said the stockpiles, suppressed by US bombing during the 12-day war with Israel last June, “will not be transferred anywhere”.

Bakayi said handing over the uranium was “never raised as an option” in talks with US negotiators.
