A total of 94.8 million kg of tea was sold in 50 auctions in Chattogram in the 2023-24 season at an average price of Tk 171.91 per kg, while 1.34 million kg of tea was sold in 25 auctions at Srimangal in Moulvibazar at an average price of Tk 171.91 per kg. Tk 171.38 per kg and 960,000 kg of tea were sold at an average price of Tk 105.19 per kg in 14 auctions in Panchgarh.
Overall, 97.1 million kilograms of tea were sold at an average price of Tk 171.24 per kilogram at the three auction centers – the lowest since the 2011-21 season, when the average price of tea was Rs. Had fallen. Up to a minimum of Tk 156.14 per kg.
During this period, tea prices reached a maximum of Tk 262.69 per kg in the 2018–19 season, with a total of Tk 20.86 billion realized from the auction.
A trader told Prothom Alo that tea production last season was more than demand and the quality of tea coming from the plains was not good, leading to a decline in tea prices at auctions. However, prices for good quality tea were better. Prices for average and low quality tea were low.
