A Dhaka court yesterday sent the detained school teacher Selim to jail for beating up 37 students of class six on Sunday.
Selim, a teacher of English and assistant headmaster of Khaled Haider Memorial High School in the capital’s Rampura, caned his students indiscriminately for failing to remember a topic they were taught before the Eid vacation.
Metropolitan Magistrate Zulfikar Hayat passed the order after police produced Selim before the court seeking confinement of the detainee in jail until completion of the investigation.
As there was no lawyer representing the accused teacher, no bail petition was submitted court sources said.
Meanwhile, education ministry officials visited the school yesterday and spoke to the students, said Fatema Akhter, a student and victim of Selim’s aggression.
