Speakers at a function in Gaibandha said teachers’ community could play a very important role in making their institutions smoking free in a bid to save the learners from very risky diseases. They emphasize on including the adverse effects and bad impacts in the academic syllabuses for creating the awareness among the young generations about the health risk of smoking.
They made these comments for exchanging views in a meeting jointly organized by district tobacco control task force committee and Polli Unnayon prokolpo, Bogra, at the conference room of Gaibandha Modern Hospital here. With civil surgeon (CS), Dr. M. Shahidul Haque in the chair, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by district health education officer Mir Musharrof Hossain, chief coordinator of PUP Sheik M. Abu Hasnat and head teacher Mostafizur Rahman.
CS Dr. M. Shahidul Haque said every year a total of 57,000 people aged over 30 years die and 3,82,000 are affected with various chronicle diseases in our country due to use of tobacco.
They also highlighted the need for making the public places including bus terminal and rail station for smoking free through creating mass awareness to save the people’s health and build a healthy nation. More than 50 teachers coming from different schools and colleges including social workers participated in the meeting spontaneously.
