He also said that the candidates participating in the bypolls would be able to conduct election campaigns from now on.

The Gaibandha-5 (Saghta-Phulchhari) constituency fell vacant after the death of Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miya on 23 July. Although the by-election was of a relatively small scale, the Election Commission took all measures to ensure a fair election process.

Four hours after the start of polling on 12 October, the Election Commission postponed the by-election amid widespread accounts of irregularities.

It was the first parliamentary by-election under the supervision of the Election Commission headed by Qazi Habibul Awal. The commission previously oversaw nearly 800 local government elections, including the Camilla City Corporation.
