The regional government has warned that days of rain have increased the risk of further landslides, while fresh heavy snowfall – more than 10 centimeters (four inches) in places – could cause more buildings to collapse under its weight.

About 18,000 homes in the Ishikawa region remained without power on Monday, while more than 66,100 homes were without water on Sunday.

According to media reports, many of the 28,800 people housed in government shelters did not have adequate water, electricity and heating.

“Disaster-related deaths must be prevented at all costs. I want to improve the poor environment in shelters,” Ishikawa Governor Hiroshi Hase told broadcaster NHK.
