The number of tigers is increasing in the Sundarbans

Camera trapping work will resume from Sharankhola range of Bagerhat from 1st November. It will continue for four months and will end on 29 February 2024 at Chandpai range. Camera trapping will be done in 665 grid. So far 200 cameras have been installed in Satkhira range and 140 in Khulna range. Due to stormy and rainy weather, the installation of cameras will be stopped for the next six months.

180 cameras will be installed in Sharankhola and 145 in Chandpai. Camera trapping captures not only the position of tigers, but also the position of tiger prey (deer and wild boar).

According to sources in the Forest Department, the area of ​​the Sundarbans in the Bangladesh part is 6,017 square kilometres. Of this, 4,832 km² is forest and the rest is wetland. As of 1997 records, 289 species live in woodlands and 219 species live in wetlands.

As per the 2015 census, there were 106 tigers in the Sunderbans while the number increased to 114 as per the 2018 census.
