Highlighting the social context of the country at present, he said that Bangladesh’s annual exports have increased almost four times and currently stand at US$ 55.56 billion. The allocation for social security programs has steadily increased to Tk 126,272 crore for about 106.1 million beneficiaries in the current financial year.

With the aim of inclusive growth, he said, last year a universal pension scheme for all citizens above 18 years of age except government employees was launched for the first time in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh has already achieved self-sufficiency in food production by increasing production of various crops including rice, maize, potatoes, vegetables and mustard.

“Despite the global crisis, food security remains intact in the country. At present, Bangladesh ranks third in rice production, second in jute production, second in freshwater fish production and first in Hilsa production in the world,” the President said.

Shahabuddin said the country’s power generation capacity was only 4,942 MW in 2009, which has now increased to 29,727 MW including captive and renewable energy. However, 100 percent electricity facility is being provided to the people.

He said the prestigious Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) under construction is expected to supply power to the country’s national grid this year.
